Burcu Akkan, a 2013 graduate of Afyon Kocatepe University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Department of Economics, met with current students to share her life experiences as a mother of a child with special needs, her entrepreneurial journey, and her work in the media sector.
Akkan, who began her professional career through remote work, noted that her experience in media consultancy significantly boosted her self-confidence. These experiences eventually led her to establish her first company, BRC Media and Promotion Organization, which offers photography, promotional videos, and social media content production for clients ranging from healthcare institutions to corporate brands. She later launched a second business, BRC Party Supplies and Event Planning, focusing on creative event design and organization management.
Rather than focusing on the negative impact of the pandemic on the event sector, Akkan emphasized the new opportunities it presented, explaining how this period revitalized her entrepreneurial motivation.
Due to her daughter’s treatment process, Akkan had to temporarily hand over her business operations. She described this period as one of the most difficult challenges of her life. However, it also marked a turning point in her career, leading her to establish a new venture, FMS Media and Communication. She also shared that she is currently in the process of writing a book based on her experiences as the mother of a child with special needs, aiming to provide guidance and support to families in similar situations.
Highlighting the importance of leveraging the knowledge and experiences gained during university education, Akkan encouraged students to benefit from their professors’ expertise. She concluded by stressing the significance of following professionals in the field and not hesitating to seek help when needed in order to grow a business and expand professional networks.
The event concluded with a Q&A session and the presentation of a certificate of appreciation by Dean Prof. Dr. Gökhan Demirtaş.
